Hidden Beaches in San Diego & the Best Local Bites

If you’ve ever tried lying down a towel on Pacific Beach or La Jolla Shores in July, you know San Diego’s popular beaches are teeming with tourists. But lucky for us locals (and now you), there’s a quieter side of the coastline that offers beauty, adventure, and a blissful lack of boom boxes.

Today, I’m spilling the sandy secrets of my favorite San Diego hidden beaches, plus my go-to food spots nearby to serve as a self-guided version of our San Diego food tours. Every stop pairs surf with something seriously tasty, because no beach day is complete without something delicious to devour afterward.

Ready? Let’s dive into the best secluded beaches and where to eat like a true San Diegan.

Before we jump in, here’s a local’s heads-up:

These hidden gems can be tricky to access. Expect dirt trails, cliff paths, or long walks. There are no public restrooms, lifeguards, or trash bins; pack wisely and always leave it better than you found it.

1. Smuggler’s Cove at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park

Smuggler's cove

Neighborhood: Ocean Beach / Sunset Cliffs

Vibe: Sea caves, epic sunsets, and a dash of pirate fantasy

This little nook at Sunset Cliffs is pure magic, but only visible at low tide. Smuggler’s Cove is like nature’s secret reward for the adventurous to enjoy: dramatic sea caves, crashing waves, and an unbeatable sunset view.

How to get there:
Head to the Ladera Street trailhead and look for the paths that cut down the cliffside. It’s a bit of a scramble, so wear real shoes (no flip-flops, please).

Know before you go:
No signs, no amenities, and no safety rails. Check tide charts before you go, this spot is literally swallowed by the sea at high tide.

Local Bite Nearby:
Little Lion Café – This cozy European-inspired café serves a killer brunch and feels like a warm hug after a salty hike. Order the quinoa breakfast bowl or the short rib hash, you won’t regret it.

2. Black’s Beach

Black's beach

Neighborhood: La Jolla / Torrey Pines

Vibe: Secluded surf, serious cliffs, and au naturel freedom

Black’s Beach:
San Diego’s most notorious stretch of sand. It’s gorgeous, rugged, and clothing-optional. Don’t worry, you’ll find fully-clothed hikers and surfers too. But if you’re in the mood to let it all hang out, this is the place.

How to get there:
Park at the Torrey Pines Gliderport and follow the steep, winding path down the cliffside. The walk is a workout, but the view? Pure postcard.

Know before you go:
No lifeguards, long hike in and out, and no restrooms. Bring water, sunscreen, and maybe a beach umbrella if you plan to linger. This area is renowned for its water activities and stunning views of the Pacific coastline.

Local Bite Nearby:
Galaxy Taco – Located near La Jolla Shores, this spot does upscale tacos right. Think house-made tortillas, local seafood, and cocktails that hit just right after a sunny day at the beach. If you’re interested in exploring the best of the area, join us on a La Jolla food tour.

3. Mushroom Beach, La Jolla

Mushroom beach

Neighborhood: La Jolla

Vibe: Tide pools, funky rock formations, peaceful and photogenic

If you love tide pooling and surreal rockscapes, Mushroom Beach is your hidden haven. The beach earned its name from the mushroom-shaped rock formations scattered along the shore, especially stunning at golden hour.

How to get there:
Enter the beach via the public beach access via Palomar Ave. and Neptune Pl., and walk south past the rock formations, and you’ve arrived! Make sure it’s low tide during the time you decide to visit, as the spot becomes more stunning.

Know before you go:
Best visited at low tide. Great for families and photographers alike, but still no amenities. Pack out all trash (and maybe a snack for the walk back).

Local Bite Nearby:
La Ola Seafood – This is the place for fresh Mexican seafood.  Enjoy fish or shrimp tacos, and complimentary seafood soup with any order, plus it’s a casual spot, which makes it a perfect post beach stop.

4. North Del Mar near 29th Street

Neighborhood: North Del Mar
Vibe: Wide open sand, peaceful surf, and paws welcome

Searching for a relaxing beach that’s big on serenity and small on foot traffic? Head to North Del Mar, especially around 29th Street. It’s dog-friendly, less crowded than the main beach, and you can catch some mellow waves or simply stroll along the shore. It’s also a peaceful detour if you’re planning to explore the area on a Del Mar food tour.

How to get there:
Park in the neighborhood near 29th Street or walk north from the main Del Mar lifeguard station. The farther north you go, the fewer people you’ll see.

Know before you go:
You won’t find facilities or rentals here, so bring your own chairs, snacks, and good beach karma.

Local Bite Nearby:
Zel’s Del Mar – With a breezy patio, local beer on tap, and a menu full of fresh SoCal comfort food, Zel’s is a neighborhood favorite. Grab the mahi sliders or ahi poke bowl, you earned it.

Final Tips for Exploring San Diego’s Hidden Beaches

Before you grab your towel and hit the cliffs, here are a few parting tips:

Know Before You Go:

  • Check the tides: Especially at places like Sunset Cliffs and Mushroom Beach, low tide is your golden hour. You can check the tides, here.
  • Bring what you need: No snack bars, bathrooms, or beach chairs waiting for you, so pack your essentials and maybe a backup granola bar.
  • Leave no trace: Seriously. Bring a bag for trash, and if you see someone else’s plastic cup, be the hero and pick it up.
  • Footwear matters: Flip-flops are cute, but not great for steep trails or rocky tidepools. Opt for trail runners or sturdy sandals instead, you’ll thank me on the climb back up.
  • Don’t count on cell service: Download directions or maps in advance, and maybe let someone know where you’re headed. (You know, just in case the sea tries to keep you.)

See You on the Sand

Whether you’re here for a long weekend or lucky enough to call San Diego home, I hope this guide helps you trade crowds for cliffs and chaos for calm.
