The Best Outdoor Activities in San Diego: Adventures by Land, Sea, and Sky
If you’re anything like me, you know there’s no better way to experience San Diego than by getting outdoors. Whether you’re drawn to the waves, the trails, or somewhere in between, this city is packed with outdoor activities San Diego has become famous for.
I’m so excited to share my personal list of the best activities in the great outdoors that San Diego has to offer. So grab your shades, sunscreen, and sense of adventure – let’s go!
Kayak the Sea Caves in La Jolla
If you’ve never paddled through the incredible sea caves of La Jolla, you’re missing out on one of San Diego’s most unforgettable outdoor things to do in San Diego. La Jolla’s coastal cliffs are dotted with dramatic caves you can explore by kayak. Some tours even let you paddle inside depending on the tides! It’s a must-do, and bonus: you often spot sea lions, dolphins, and even the occasional leopard shark from your kayak. Trust me, the views from the water are unreal.
If you need a little guidance, I highly recommend booking a tour with Everyday California. Their experienced guides are passionate about marine life and will make sure your visit is both safe and unforgettable.
Snorkel with Leopard Sharks at La Jolla Shores (Seasonal)
Speaking of leopard sharks, snorkeling with them is a total bucket-list item. Every summer, thousands of these gentle creatures migrate to the warm, shallow waters of La Jolla Shores to mate. They look intimidating but are super docile and non-aggressive. Grab a snorkel set, or better yet, join a guided snorkeling tour that will take you right into the heart of the action. (Just a reminder: the best months for this are usually July through September!)
For the best experience, I suggest checking out La Jolla Kayak. They offer snorkeling tours specifically designed for leopard shark encounters, and their knowledgeable guides ensure you get the most out of this unique opportunity.
Take a Hike: Explore San Diego’s Best Trails
If your idea of fun involves a good pair of hiking shoes and killer views, San Diego has you covered. Some of my all-time favorite hikes include:
Sunset Cliffs Natural Park: This trail isn’t just about the walk; it’s about the stunning coastal cliffs that light up at sunset. With easy, flat paths and incredible views of the Pacific Ocean, it’s a perfect spot for a relaxing stroll or a romantic evening.
Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve: One of the most iconic hiking areas in San Diego, Torrey Pines offers several trails that wind through rare pine trees, sandstone canyons, and lead to breathtaking bluffs overlooking the ocean. The Razor Point Trail and Guy Fleming Trail are two personal favorites in this state-protected gem.
Annie’s Canyon Trail: Located in the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve, Annie’s Canyon is a fun, adventurous slot canyon hike that involves a bit of scrambling, perfect for thrill-seekers and families alike. Plus, the views at the top are so worth it.
Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve: If you’re looking for a little more challenge and a change from the coastal vibe, Elfin Forest’s trails wind through oak woodlands and chaparral. The Way Up Trail gives you a great cardio workout and ends with panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. Bonus: There’s a peaceful park area near the trailhead for a post-hike picnic.
Whether you’re looking for things to do outside San Diego or an easy coastal stroll, San Diego’s hiking trails offer something for everyone.
Walk with Us at Balboa Park!
I’m so thrilled to announce that So Diego now offers a Balboa Park walking tour! If you want a mix of fresh air, history, and culture, come stroll with us. Balboa Park is San Diego’s cultural heart, filled with gardens, museums, Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, and just a general sense of magic. Our new walking tour brings it all to life with stories, insider tips, and hidden gems you wouldn’t find on your own. (Shameless plug, but seriously – you’ll love it!) It’s one of those unforgettable attractions that every visitor should check out. This is just one of our many San Diego walking tours designed to help you experience the city like a local.
Sail the Bay with Sail San Diego
There’s nothing quite like feeling the breeze on your face as you sail across San Diego Bay. I highly recommend hopping aboard with Sail San Diego for a daytime cruise or even a sunset sail. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a total newbie, it’s pure bliss to be out on the water with the skyline shimmering in the background. Plus, you might even spot some playful dolphins or a lazy sea lion sunbathing nearby!
Bike Around Mission Bay and Coronado Island
Renting a bike is such a fun way to cover more ground while still soaking in the sights. I love cruising along the Mission Bay bike path — it’s flat, scenic, and filled with cute spots to stop for a snack or a drink. You can pedal through waterfront parks, across bridges, and even catch a glimpse of SeaWorld’s SkyTower.
If you want something even more postcard-perfect, take the ferry to Coronado and bike around the island. The wide, flat roads, adorable boutiques, and picturesque beaches make Coronado one of the most charming bike rides you can find. Make sure to stop by the historic Hotel del Coronado for a treat or a cold drink by the ocean! Biking around the island is just one of the many fun things to do in Coronado, whether you’re visiting for the day or planning a longer stay.
Play Beach Volleyball at South Mission Beach
Want to get a little sporty? Head to South Mission Beach, where you’ll find open volleyball courts ready for pickup games or just some casual fun with friends. Even if you’re a total beginner, it’s a blast — and honestly, who doesn’t want to dive into the sand with the Pacific Ocean in the background? Grab a ball, make a few new friends, and channel your inner beach volleyball star.
Learn to Surf at Pacific Beach or La Jolla Shores
When in San Diego, do as the locals do — and that means surfing! Whether you’re brand new or just a little rusty, there are tons of great surf schools around Pacific Beach and La Jolla Shores that offer lessons:
- Pacific Beach Surf School
- Surf Diva Surf School
- San Diego Surf School
- Mission Beach Surfing School
- Surf Education Academy
- Menehune Surf School
It’s such an empowering feeling when you catch your first wave, and trust me, you’ll be hooked. Plus, there’s no better souvenir than a newfound love for surfing!
Go Sport Fishing with H&M Landing
If you’ve got a sense of adventure (and a love for fresh seafood), book a sport fishing trip with H&M Landing. Located right on the waterfront, H&M Landing offers everything from half-day trips to deep-sea fishing expeditions. It’s one of the oldest and most respected names in the business, and their experienced crews know exactly where to go to hook you up with a big one. Yellowtail, tuna, and even marlin could be on your line depending on the season!
Ride Horses on the Beach at Surfside Ranch
How dreamy does this sound? Riding horses on the beach is every bit as magical as it sounds. Surfside Ranch in Imperial Beach offers guided beach rides where you can trot along the shore with the ocean breeze in your hair. They cater to all experience levels, so even if you’re new to riding, you’ll feel completely comfortable. It’s an unforgettable way to see a different side of San Diego’s coastline and one of the most unique outdoor activities you can do in town.
Final Thoughts
There’s no denying it — San Diego is an outdoor lover’s paradise. From riding waves to riding horses, there are endless ways to get out, explore, and fall in love with this incredible place. If you’re looking for fun outdoor activities, San Diego is packed with attractions and adventures you’ll never forget. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker, a beach bum, or just looking for a new escapade, there’s something here for everyone. And the best part? Many of these experiences are free, and you’ll be soaking up that gorgeous SoCal sunshine the entire day.
So next time you’re looking for the best outdoor activities San Diego has to offer, you know exactly where to start.
