A Local’s Guide to Things to Do Near San Diego International Airport
Whether you’re fresh off a plane or have a bit of time to kill before takeoff, let me tell you, the area around San Diego International Airport is packed with things to see, eat, and experience. As someone who works with So Diego and has lived in SD for over 6 years, I’m spilling the tea on the absolute best things to do near the airport terminals. From waterfront dining to quirky gardens and historical gems, I’ve got you covered. Ready? Let’s dive in!
Navigating San Diego Airport
Before we discuss the things to do near San Diego Airport, we will cover the best way to get to and from the airport.
- Rideshares & Taxis: Uber, Lyft, and taxis have designated pickup zones just across from baggage claim.
- Shuttles & Hotels: Many San Diego hotels offer shuttle services for guests.
- Rental Cars: The Rental Car Center provides a variety of options for travelers.
Terminals at SAN
- Terminal 1: Home to domestic carriers like Southwest, JetBlue, and Frontier, serving major U.S. cities.
- Terminal 2: Handles international flights with airlines such as American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Alaska Airlines, British Airways, and Lufthansa, offering direct flights to destinations in Europe, Asia, and Latin America.
With its streamlined layout, quick access to the freeway, and close proximity to San Diego’s top destinations, SAN makes traveling in the city seamless.
Dine in Style at Coasterra
Drinks + a view = heaven!
First things first—let’s talk about food. One of my favorite spots near the airport is Coasterra, located right on Harbor Island. Imagine this: the San Diego skyline twinkling across the bay, a warm breeze brushing past you, and a plate of the most mouthwatering Baja sea bass in front of you. That’s Coasterra.
The vibe here is modern, chic, and oh-so-San Diego. It’s the perfect spot for a sunset dinner or even just sipping a margarita while soaking in the view. Across the bay, you’ll even have a view of the USS Midway Museum, another perfect activity for families, veterans, and history buffs. They specialize in modern Mexican cuisine, so whether you go for the short rib barbacoa, fresh ceviche, or their famous churros, your taste buds are in for a treat. Bonus: It’s so close to the airport that you’ll feel like you’re still floating on cloud nine.
Global Flavors at International Restaurant Row
Just minutes from the San Diego airport, International Restaurant Row in Mission Hills is a must for food lovers. Whether you’re craving Thai, Mexican, or a killer sandwich, this stretch of India Street has you covered.
For bold Thai flavors, Saffron Thai is a longtime favorite—don’t skip the chicken satay with peanut sauce. Wine lovers should check out The Wine Vault & Bistro for expertly paired seasonal dishes and curated flights. If a hearty sandwich is more your style, Rubicon Deli delivers with fresh-baked bread and flavorful spreads (the jalapeño cheddar is a must!).
Save room for dessert at Gelato Vero Caffe, a cozy gelato and espresso shop that’s been a local go-to for decades. And if you want a taste of San Diego history, grab rolled tacos or a carne asada burrito at El Indio, a family-owned staple since 1940.
Whatever you’re craving, this area has a delicious option waiting for you!
Discover All the Fun at Liberty Station
Liberty Station is one of those places that has everything. I always tell friends visiting San Diego to carve out at least a few hours to explore this vibrant hub of art, culture, food, and fun. Once a naval training center, it’s now a hotspot for locals and visitors alike—and it’s just a stone’s throw from the airport.
Start at the Liberty Public Market, where you can graze your way through artisanal eats. From empanadas to fresh oysters, there’s something for everyone here. Feeling artsy? Pop into one of the many galleries showcasing local talent.
Need to pick up a gift for a friend? Stop by Pigment — which is known for its color-coordinated store with one-of-a-kind trinkets galore, as well as amazing candles and greeting cards you won’t find anywhere. I always stock up for birthdays and holidays for the entire year when I make a trip to Pigment.
And if you’re up for some friendly competition, check out the mini-golf course at The Loma Club. It’s cute, casual, and so much fun!
Pro tip: If you visit in the evening, keep an eye out for live music or outdoor movie screenings. Liberty Station always has something cool happening.
A Whimsical Stop at Harper’s Topiary Garden
Okay, this one’s for all my fellow lovers of quirky, off-the-beaten-path spots. Harper’s Topiary Garden is a little slice of whimsy tucked into the Mission Hills neighborhood. It’s a private home where the owners have turned their front yard into a wonderland of sculpted hedges.
Think animals, people, and even a surfer dude carved out of shrubs! It’s small but absolutely worth a quick stop, especially if you’re on the hunt for a unique photo op. It’s the kind of hidden gem that makes you fall in love with San Diego’s charm all over again.
Explore Little Italy with So Diego Tours
Whenever I have friends visit, I take them to Little Italy for amazing pizza and wine! My favorite winery is Pali Wine Co.!
No San Diego itinerary is complete without a trip to Little Italy, and lucky for you travelers, it’s practically around the corner from the airport. This neighborhood is brimming with charm, incredible food, and lively energy.
And here comes my not-so-subtle plug: If you really want to experience Little Italy like a local, join one of So Diego’s tours! I promise they’re the best way to uncover the area’s rich history while indulging in some of its best bites. Pasta, gelato, and wine tastings? Yes, please!
After the Little Italy food tour, wander the streets at your own pace. Pop into boutique shops, sip an espresso at a sidewalk café, or just soak up the ambiance. If you’re here on a Saturday, don’t miss the Little Italy Farmers Market—it’s one of the best in town!
Step Back in Time in Old Town
My friend and I on stop 1 of So Diego’s Tequila, Tacos and Tombstones tour! Cafe Coyote has the most delicious fresh tortillas made “a mano” that you get to taste on the tour!
Calling all history buffs! Old Town San Diego is a must-visit spot if you’re in the mood to learn a little about the city’s past. Known as the birthplace of California, Old Town is brimming with historic buildings, museums, and charming shops.
If you’re like me and love mixing history with a side of tacos, check out So Diego’s Tequila, Tacos, and Tombstones Tour. (Okay, last shameless plug, I swear!) It’s part ghost story, part foodie adventure, and 100% fun. You’ll hear fascinating tales about Old Town’s past while sampling some of the best Mexican food in the area. And yes, there’s tequila involved. I even brought my friend visiting from Colorado on this tour over the summer and we both had a blast!
Even if you’re exploring solo, there’s so much to see. The Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is a living history museum that transports you back to the 1800s. And for some shopping, Bazaar del Mundo is filled with colorful crafts and souvenirs that make perfect gifts—or keepsakes for yourself.
Final Thoughts
See what I mean? You don’t have to venture far from the San Diego International Airport to find amazing things to do. Whether you’re a foodie, a history lover, or just someone looking to soak up the local culture, there’s something for everyone nearby.
