Affordable Adventures: Exploring San Diego on a Budget
San Diego was recently mentioned as the most expensive city in the country, but it doesn’t mean everything is expensive here. There is plenty to do (and eat) when you’re trying to explore without breaking the bank. This guide includes some of the best affordable things San Diego has to offer for your next trip:
Take a Walk: Explore San Diego’s Most Scenic Neighborhoods
Nothing is better than getting your steps in! One of my favorite ways to soak in the beauty of San Diego is simply by walking. Whether you’re a visitor or a local, exploring on foot is one of the best things to do for free in this beautiful city. Here are just a few of my favorite neighborhoods:
Balboa Park
This historic park is one of my absolute favorite San Diego attractions to wander. It’s a cultural gem that combines art, history, and nature and is a must-see San Diego attraction. Start near the Air & Space Museum and make your way through these great spots:
- Palm Canyon – A hidden grove of towering palm trees.
- The Organ Pavilion – A stunning open-air concert venue. Free concerts every Sunday at 2pm.
- Botanical Building & Lily Pond – One of the most photographed spots in the city.
- Spanish Village Art Center – A vibrant collection of artists’ studios.
- Rose Garden & The Prado – A peaceful spot to admire colorful blooms.
- Cabrillo Bridge – Offers the best views of the iconic California Tower, a landmark of historic California architecture.
This will take you about an hour to walk at a leisurely pace as you explore the iconic Balboa Park and its exhibits and trails. Balboa Park walking tours are also a great way for visitors to make the most of their time while learning about the park’s architectural details, gardens, and cultural spots.
Budget Tip: After your walk, treat yourself to happy hour at Cucina Urbana or Corner Draft House for affordable bites and drinks.
La Jolla Coastal Walk
La Jolla is one of my favorite places to explore on foot. This walk takes you through some of the most picturesque spots in the area—completely free!
Start at La Jolla Shores
Begin at La Jolla Shores and take a stroll through this quaint neighborhood mixed with quaint homes and shops that make you feel like you’ve stepped into a beach town from yesteryear. Then follow this scenic route to tour La Jolla Village
Then from La Jolla Shores, make your way up to the Village by walking Paseo Dorado to Spindrift Drive, to Princess Street to end up on the Coastal Walk.
As you walk, enjoy ocean views, stunning coastal homes, and maybe even a glimpse of the public attractions like kayakers paddling to the sea caves.
La Jolla Cove
When you reach La Jolla Cove, you’ll be greeted by sea lions basking on the rocks. Look up, and you’ll spot pelicans, cormorants, and seagulls soaring above the waves. If you’re feeling adventurous, bring a snorkel and check out the colorful marine life in the La Jolla Underwater Park.
La Jolla Village
After soaking in the coastal scenery, head up to La Jolla Village, a charming area filled with art galleries, boutique shops, and hidden murals. It’s also a great place to join a La Jolla food and drink tour, where you can sample local bites and beverages while learning about the neighborhood’s history and culture. Even if you’re just window shopping, the unique atmosphere makes it worth a visit for all visitors.
Budget Tip: Where to Eat
Burger Lounge – Grab a delicious burger for just $5 before 5 PM on weekdays.
Bobboi Natural Gelato – Cool off with a scoop of handcrafted, all-natural gelato.
This scenic route offers a perfect mix of nature, wildlife, and charm—and best of all, it won’t cost you a thing!
Coronado Island
Coronado’s tree-lined streets and pristine beaches make it an amazing location to explore on foot.
On this walk, you can expect to take in more than just ocean beauty — there are gorgeous multi-million dollar homes that bring major Americana vibes with winding streets and beautiful parks along the way. Whether you’re strolling solo or taking part in a guided Coronado food tour, there’s no shortage of charming sights and savory stops to enjoy.
Start at the Hotel Del — it’s free to walk through this historic architectural marvel that has been featured in film classics like Marilyn Monroe’s film, Some Like it Hot. Then, head over to Ocean Avenue and then into Star Park, which is adjacent to the historic home of L. Frank Baum. Fun Fact: Emerald City from The Wizard of Oz is said to be inspired by The Hotel Del Coronado!
Once you’re past Star Park, walk along Orange Avenue all the way to the Ferry Landing. You can grab a sandwich or a snack along the way at Central Liquor and Deli and enjoy a bayside picnic at the Ferry Landing. If you’re looking to experience the best of Coronado, this route offers a perfect blend of history, scenic beauty, and local flavor. A fun-filled bay adventure… on a budget!
Seaport Village: A Free Waterfront Tour
Seaport Village is a perfect place to stroll, people-watch, and enjoy San Diego’s bayfront—without spending a dime. Whether you’re watching sailboats glide across the bay, spotting navy ships in the distance, or just taking in the city skyline, the views here are simply spectacular.
On weekends, you’ll often find local musicians and street performers playing everything from jazz to acoustic guitar. It’s a lively and fun atmosphere that makes the Seaport Village hosts seasonal events, from holiday light displays to cultural festivals. Be sure to check their events calendar to see what’s happening during your visit.
While Seaport Village is free to explore, if you want to splurge a little, there are plenty of affordable options—including some of the best Seaport Village restaurants with waterfront views and locally inspired dishes.
Grab a Treat – Stop by Ben & Jerry’s for a scoop of ice cream or Seaport Fudge Factory for a sweet snack.
Souvenir Shop– Browse quirky, locally-owned shops for unique gifts, handmade jewelry, and fun San Diego-themed souvenirs.
Enjoy a Drink with a View – Mike Hess Brewing and Malibu Farms offer great drinks and patio seating right by the water if you’re up for a happy hour stop.
Seaport Village is a must-visit spot for anyone looking to experience San Diego’s waterfront charm—without spending a fortune!
Take a Hike
San Diego is an outdoor lover’s paradise, and hiking is one of the best (and free) ways to experience its natural beauty. Here are my top picks:
- Torrey Pines State Reserve – Stunning ocean views and unique sandstone cliffs.
- Cowles Mountain – A moderate hike leading to the highest point in San Diego.
- Annie’s Canyon Trail – A short but adventurous slot canyon hike.
- Sunset Cliffs – Not a traditional hike, but an amazing coastal walk with breathtaking sunsets.

Happy Hour Specials from 3-6 PM

Cucina Urbana (Bankers Hill)

Cucina Urbana is a stylish yet cozy Italian eatery known for its house-made pastas, wood-fired pizzas, and inventive cocktails. It’s the perfect spot for an early dinner or a pre-theater drink before heading to Balboa Park.

This trendy, speakeasy-style gastropub in Little Italy is known for its creative cocktails and hip, rustic-industrial decor. During happy hour, you can enjoy select craft cocktails, draft beers, and gourmet appetizers at a fraction of the price.

For those who love luxury dining on a budget, Born & Raised offers a steakhouse happy hour that’s hard to beat. This upscale restaurant is famous for its elevated takes on classic dishes, mid-century modern design, and impeccable service. Don’t forget to explore nearby historical attractions like the Old Town for a touch of San Diego’s rich history and culture.
Must-Try: The $10 steak tartare and $9 house martini.
Take a Boat Ride for Just $20
You don’t need to spend hundreds on a yacht rental to enjoy San Diego from the water. For just $20, hop on the Coronado Ferry for a scenic ride across the bay.
Enjoy a beautiful boat ride from Downtown to Coronado Ferry Landing to get a view of the skyline views from the sea. From there, you can dine at restaurants at the Ferry Landing — enjoy seafood at Peohe’s or a slice of pizza at Village Pizzeria.
Budget Tip: Once in Coronado, grab an affordable and bayside meal at Cocina 35—their portions are huge, so sharing a dish is a great way to save money.
Beach Time: The Ultimate Free Activity
Nothing beats a classic beach day in San Diego. Pack a blanket, some shades, sunscreen, and a burrito from your favorite taco shop, and you’re ready for a family picnic! Beaches are not only free but also perfect for family fun and relaxation, offering a great place for the kids to splash in the safe public pools.
If you’re visiting and want to explore more of the coastline, consider taking a San Diego beach tour—a great way to discover the city’s diverse beach scenes, from iconic hot spots to hidden gems.
My favorite beaches:
- Coronado Beach – Wide, sandy shores and gentle waves.
- Pacific Beach – A lively scene with plenty of nearby food options.
- Boomer Beach – A hidden gem near La Jolla Cove.
- Black’s Beach – For those who don’t mind a little adventure.
- Moonlight State Beach – Family-friendly with fire pits and volleyball courts.
- Carlsbad Beach – A laid-back spot with beautiful sunsets.
San Diego might be expensive, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune to enjoy it! From scenic walks and epic hikes to budget-friendly eats and ocean adventures, there are so many ways to experience this city on a budget. Whether you’re planning to explore on foot or want to tour San Diego with a local guide, there are plenty of affordable options that showcase the best of the city.
